Small triangle tattoo on ankle

Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black triangle outline with an inner triangular cut-out sits on the outer ankle, with the foot and lower leg filling the frame. The linework is crisp and even, with the ink shown as a flat black fill. The skin tone is pale and the background shows dark fabric and a bag, with no colour ink visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My grandfather never measured a bed by eye. He kept a set square in his top pocket, a wedge of black enamelled steel he'd bought from a clearance sale in Reading, and he squared every corner of the allotment before anyone was allowed to plant a thing. "Crooked beans grow crooked," he told me, which made no sense when I was seven and makes perfect sense now.

The summer I was fourteen he let me lay out the new bed by the shed. I pegged the string, pulled it taut, checked the diagonals against each other the way he'd taught me, and came out a finger's width adrift. He didn't scold. He took the square from his pocket, set its inner edge against the far corner, and showed me the sliver of daylight that gave the mistake away.

We dug it out again that evening, moving the soil by lamplight while the neighbours' dogs barked at nothing. The bed came true on the second try. When he died in February the square came to me in a biscuit tin with his reading glasses and a packet of runner bean seed dated 1987.

Last spring I pegged a bed for my own tomatoes. Before the first seedling went in I checked the corners with his square, the old steel cold against my palm, and found every one of them true. I left the string up for a week anyway, just to watch the light sit inside the triangle, and then I planted.
