Stacked skulls on a forearm under UV light
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm carries a column of stacked skulls with swirled eye sockets and detailed cheekbones, rendered in fine, shaded linework. The photo is taken under ultraviolet light, so the tattoo glows bright blue against a dark background and a blue fabric sleeve on the left. The skulls overlap vertically, with each one sitting partly behind the next, and the composition fills most of the frame.

The landlord's boy had gone up to bed with a cough, and the only other guest, a surveyor named Pritchard, had been asleep in the settle since the soup.

She took the ultraviolet lamp from under the register because the cellar stairs were black and the paraffin had run out. Her grandfather had used it to check the brewing vats for mould, the bluish glare turning every cobweb into a silver thread. She switched it on and the room changed. The whitewash went violet, the brass taps glowed, and the carved oak panelling beside the hearth, which she had never once looked at properly, showed a column of skulls climbing the wall, each one tucked behind the next, their swirled eye sockets full of light.
She stood very still for a while. Then she carried the lamp closer and found that the carving had been painted over, years ago, with something that drank the ultraviolet and gave it back as blue. Her grandfather had told her the skulls were the inn's old guests, the ones the snow had kept and never let go of.
Pritchard woke to the glowing wall and reached for his coat without being asked. Mabel switched the lamp off. In the dark the skulls faded one by one from the top down, the way the snow had come, and she lit the last candle and went down for the cellar key.
