Glowing stag on a forearm under UV light

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The image shows a stag's head and antlers tattooed on the forearm, with flowing swirls and small dots around the figure. The ink fluoresces bright blue under blacklight, so the linework and shading appear as a glowing, mostly solid blue design. The dark background and a plaid shirt sleeve at the left edge frame the arm in the centre.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Teodra kept her sheep on the north bank, where the grass was sweet and the wolves were few, and she did not look up when the stag came down through the alders that evening. Everyone knew the stag. It was the colour of ash, it carried its antlers like a pair of unlit torches, and it had been seen at every ford for three generations, always walking away from people and never toward them.

Her grandson Piro saw its light first. When the moon slid behind cloud the stag still showed, lines of blue like river ice running down its neck and along its shoulders, and small stars caught in the hair of its flanks. Teodra told him the stag gathered the stars that fell into the black pool below the ford, and that it drank them so the sky would not go empty. Piro did not believe her, so he went to the pool after the stag had gone, knelt on the wet stones, and reached for a star that lay under the surface like a coin.

The water was so cold it burned. When he pulled his hand out, the skin of his palm glowed blue and kept glowing, through supper and through the night, through the washing of his face and the lighting of the lamp. He could not hide it under his cloak. In the morning his grandmother took one look at him, pulled on her boots and went out to the fold, where he heard her counting sheep with his hand held up in the dark. Each one came to him, lit like a lantern, and not one of them ever wandered toward the ford again.
