Blue UV-reactive tattoo of a stag with large antlers and flowing smoke-like swirls on a leg, lit by blacklight.

Glowing stag tattoo under UV light

Calf · Colour · Photo

A stag's head and antlers are rendered in fine glowing lines, with long wisps and swirls flowing down from the neck and scattered dots suggesting sparks. The ink appears only under ultraviolet light, glowing a bright electric blue against darker skin and a dark background. The composition is a single centred figure filling the length of the leg, with a plaid fabric edge visible at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair came over the moor the week the hay was cut, and by the third night Mrs Abernethy had stopped asking the old showman where the deer came from. Everyone knew the stag lived in the canvas booth behind the hook-a-duck. You paid a penny, pulled the flap, and the violet lamp hung from its pole and showed you him: a stag standing over the trestle table, antlers branching up into the dark, his neck trailing long threads of light like smoke off a snuffed candle.

The showman's daughter, Ada, was the one who told the children how it worked. The stag was not painted, she said. He was the last of the wild herd that had lived under the hill before the mill came, and he had got himself into the cloth so he could keep an eye on the village. Only the lamp could find him. Put the light out and he went back to wherever deer go, which was somewhere with a great deal of starlight and no fences.

On the last night a boy from the lower farm came in with a torch, meaning to prove it a trick. He clicked it on. The booth filled with ordinary yellow light, and there was nothing on the table but a folded blanket and a tin of paint. Ada was not there. Outside, the fair was already packing up, the roundabout horses stacked like firewood.

But when the boy walked home across the stubble, a long pale shape kept pace beside him at the edge of the field, stepping over the stooks without a sound, its breath lit like a lamp, and every few yards a spark rose from its flank and went out. He never told anyone what he had seen. He only said, when they asked, that he had been looked after, and that he still did not hold a torch the way other people did.
