Stag and doe with flowers on both thighs
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A stag with branching antlers sits on one thigh and a doe wearing a flower crown sits on the other, each surrounded by roses and smaller flowers. The work uses black outline linework with light shading in the petals and fur, and the design wraps down from the upper thigh toward the knee. The background is dark, and the skin is shown in soft, even light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The stag came down to the harbour at Skerrow in the last week of September, when the bracken had gone the colour of rust and the boats were being hauled up for winter. His antlers spread wider than a cart's wheel and he walked the quay as if he owned the tide marks. Old Maren, who mended nets outside the chandler's, said he had a length of fishing line caught in one tine and a look on his face like a man who had already paid for his passage.

The doe lived on the island of Holm, three miles of grey water out. Each spring she wove a crown of the wild roses that grew along the cliff path and hung it on the gatepost of the lighthouse keeper's cottage, where the sea wind could get at it. Nobody knew who she was waiting for. The fishermen said she was only fond of flowers, and they rowed past the gatepost without looking at it, the way you do with something you suspect is not yours to see.
Ferryman Tobiah Lusk took the stag across in the last of the light, and the stag sat in the stern with his head low and his antlers dripping, and said nothing the whole crossing. He carried a bundle of roses from the cliff path tied in sea-grass. When they reached the slip he climbed out, found the doe at the gatepost with her crown still bright from the morning, and laid his bundle beside hers. Then he stood there until the tide turned.
They say that on still nights you can see two crowns on the lighthouse gate, and that the petals never brown, because no one on Holm has ever had the heart to take them down.
