Two roses on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two open roses with layered petals and hatched leaves, drawn in fine black outline. The linework is even and the petals are left unshaded, so the design relies on line alone. The bare legs rest on white sheets, with the design placed on the outer thigh of the leg on the left.

Dear Tertius, the two roses by the south wall opened this morning, and I have not stopped looking at them since. You will laugh at me for writing of flowers, but you were always the one who drew them in the dust with a stick, so you will understand. Your father planted them the spring before he died, from cuttings he carried back wrapped in wet sacking from the nursery at Herculaneum, and he swore they would never take in our clay. They took. They are the only thing on the farm that has not argued with me this year.

Their petals are not coloured, not really. The painter who came from the city last month wanted to wash them in madder, and I told him no. I wanted the lines to do the work, the way the hatching does on the leaves, so that a man walking past sees only the edges of things and fills in the red himself. He grumbled and charged me for the ink anyway. Still, when the sun comes low across the terrace the shadows lie inside each fold, and the open heart of the nearer bloom looks like a cup somebody has just set down.

Pay attention to the leaves, because I did not. I had them hatched by the boy who keeps the lamps, fine diagonal strokes as close as wheat stalks. Yesterday I found a snail trail running through the lower one, silver and perfectly straight, and I laughed aloud alone in the garden, which the slaves must think mad. Come home before the autumn rains. Bring the drawing stylus, and bring yourself, and we will see which of us can make the next bud look more like a real one.
