Deer and autumn flowers on a back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A stylised deer with antlers stands in the centre, drawn with black linework and dark shading on its body. Orange flowers, green leaves and pink buds on thin stems wrap around its legs and lower body in a loose circle. The colours are bright and fairly solid, with soft pink and orange fills against the pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hush now, the fiddle can wait. Ada Pryce, you were stamping like a cart horse, and I'll not tell this one twice. It's the autumn of the hart that came down off Crowmere Fell, the year the bracken went copper and the hall still smelt of new hay.

The hart had antlers like a dead oak and eyes the colour of rain on slate. Nobody asked him to dance. He simply stepped in between the reels, and wherever his hooves touched the boards, pink campion pushed up through the cracks and curled round his legs. Ada, who had never once been asked by a lad from the village, walked straight out to him with her arms full of marigolds.

They turned together past midnight, orange petals sticking to his flanks and green leaves dropping from the rafters like applause. The fiddler swore he played until his bow frayed. When the lamps were lit again at dawn, the hart was gone, and the floor was ringed with leaves and buds, neat as a wreath laid down by careful hands.

Ada kept the marigold stems in a jar on her windowsill until they rooted, and every October the bracken turns copper and the hall smells of hay again. Mind your feet on the way out. Some of those leaves are still under the boards.
