Stag head with botanical sprig sketch
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A purple pen sketch shows a stag's head in profile with branching antlers and a closed eye, set inside loose circular linework. A leafy sprig with several leaves rises from the lower left and overlaps the circle. The lines are sketchy and varied in weight, with faint construction marks visible around the drawing on cream paper.

Dear Tom, the first frost came on Tuesday and the lower field has gone white as a sheet nobody has slept in. Dad's knee is worse, so I've been doing the milking and the feed round before light. I'm writing this on the back of the feed invoice because the kitchen table is still covered in your old seed catalogues. I haven't moved them. You'd laugh at that.

There's a stag coming through the hedge gap most mornings now. Twelve points, or he was a month ago, before he dropped the lot. He stands at the end of the bean rows with his head low, like he's reading the ground. Yesterday I brought him the last of the rosehips from the bottom wall. It's daft, I know, but Mum always did that, and I didn't have the heart to stop.
Last night I found your sketchbook in the drawer under the radio, the one you did with the purple biro. The page at the back has a deer's face in it, eye shut, antlers going up like branches, and a sprig of something leafy coming in from the corner as if someone has picked it and carried it across. You never finished it. I've left it on the windowsill where the afternoon light comes through.
Come home for the lambing in March if you can, and bring the good thermos. The stag's still here, and I think he's waiting to see whether you'll draw him properly this time. Love, Jo
