Stained glass rose in an ornate frame on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A red rose with green leaves sits in a blue stained glass style oval, held up by a pale hand in front of pink and red panels. The gold scrollwork frame has bold black outlines and a red gem at its base. The design is rendered in saturated colour with heavy outlines and smooth shading, and fills the calf in a centred, symmetrical composition.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the fire, for this is the part where the old queen of Sallowmere sends for the glazier. Her gardens had gone grey in a single night, every bloom on the Thornwick terraces turned to ash-coloured paper, and the only thing left living was one red rose under a bell of coloured glass in her western window. Nobody could lift that glass. Every hand that tried came away frost-bitten to the wrist.

Tamsin Vane was the only glazier in the valley who would take the commission, and she took it for a loaf of bread and a promise that her daughter could keep warm through the winter. She cut her panes by lamplight: blue for a sky that had gone cold, rose for a dawn that had not come, and one red piece, deep as a bruise, for the heart of the thing. When she set the last one in, the rose shivered and lifted itself a finger's width off its stem, the way a sleeper turns over.
Then the queen came down with the gilt frame that had hung empty above her hearth for forty years and asked what it would cost to keep a living thing. Tamsin said the frame would do it, if Her Majesty would hold the glass herself. So the queen lifted the bell with her bare hand, and the frost ran off her fingers like rain off a slate roof, and the rose did not wilt.
The rose is still in that window, they say, and the gardens came back green by spring, though nobody ever learned what the queen gave up in exchange. Tamsin's daughter swears the red piece of glass is warm to the touch even now. Mind the fire, and off to bed with you.
