Star and sphere thigh tattoo in blue and red
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo sits on the outer thigh and shows a bold block-letter shape divided into blue and red panels, with an outlined five-point star on the left. A shaded sphere sits above the lettering, with soft highlights and grey tones. Solid black outlines define the shapes, and the composition is framed by denim and a brown tooled boot.

Sit closer, the rain's come in under the awnings and it'll find the lot of you by the second bell. Down at Callow Street market there was a tin sign over Mrs Okonedo's fish stall, blue on the left where the sky went, red on the right where the sun leaned in, with a brass star pinned to the corner like a brooch on a coat. Nobody could say who first painted it. The rain took the colour off every winter and Mrs Okonedo painted it back every spring, and she never once asked anyone to read it.

Now, the boy. Tomas Vell came to the market in March with one boot and a fistful of coppers, and he sold odd things off a blanket: a glass eye, a compass that pointed at the nearest bakery, and a jam jar with the planet Ruddle inside it, no bigger than a plum. Half the town said it was a lamp. The other half said it was a lie. Tomas swore it was Ruddle, that it had been sleeping since his grandmother's time, and that if you held it to the lamp at dusk you could watch its bands of cloud turning over like a slow cart wheel.
He sold it to nobody. On the last wet night of the year he tipped the jar into Mrs Okonedo's bucket of brine, and the planet rolled out, shining, and climbed the tin sign until it sat above the block letters, and the brass star lit up beside it. The rain stopped mid-drip. Every stall went quiet at once. Tomas was never seen again, but the sign is still there, and if you buy me a hot pie I'll tell you where the boot went.
