Star cluster tattoo on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's neck with dark bob-cut hair and a hoop earring visible. A cluster of small black stars of varying sizes trails diagonally from the hairline towards the shoulder. The stars are rendered in thin, crisp black linework with some solid fills, against warm skin tones in soft, even lighting.

The Calais night boat was forty minutes out when Ruth Halloran gave up on the radar and climbed to the open deck with a flask of tea gone cold. The sea was flat for once, black as slate, and the sky had that rinsed, scoured look that only came after a week of gales. The old second mate had told her you could steer by the stars if the instruments failed, and she had never once believed him.

She found the cluster low in the west, a loose trail of points running from the horizon up toward the masthead light. Some were pricked sharp and small, others swollen and solid as pennies. Her father had called them the Tumbled Purse and taught her their names on the allotment, a torch clamped in his teeth. Now she traced them with her thumb along the rail, counting, because counting kept her from thinking about the message from the purser that had come through at eleven.
The message said Mr Abbott had asked for her by name. He had crossed every Thursday for nine years, always in the same grey coat, always buying two bread rolls and never eating either. Somewhere around the third year Ruth had decided he was waiting for someone who was not coming back on any boat. She had not decided what to do about that, and the stars offered no help with it.
When she went below, the lounge was empty apart from a cup on the table and a folded newspaper. Someone had written in the margin, in careful capitals, FOLLOW THE SMALL ONES, and underlined it twice. Ruth sat down, took the pencil from behind her ear, and copied the words onto the back of her hand so she would not lose them before the harbour lights came up.
