Trail of stars across upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A trail of stars rises diagonally from the shoulder blade towards the base of the neck on a person's upper back, seen from behind with the face out of frame. The larger stars are drawn in bold black outlines with soft grey shading behind them, while the smaller stars are solid filled shapes. The black and grey tones sit on pale skin against a plain green background, with a dark top along the lower right edge.

Old Mabry kept the orchard wall on the north side of Holloway Farm, and every October she climbed the ladder with a tin of tar and a bag of brass tacks. The thing she was mending was a line of wire that ran from the pear tree's lowest branch up to the cote roof, and on it she hung little star-shaped tin plates her grandson had cut from a biscuit box. The big ones she outlined in pencil first, so the frost would have something to follow.

Her grandson Tobias asked her once why stars needed a shadow. She said stars were lonely enough without being flat, and that a shadow was only the place a thing leaned on the dark to stay put. He thought this was nonsense and said so. She let him believe it, the way she let him believe the frost came up from the hill.
The year the wire snapped in a gale, the small stars came down into the beds and were lost in the leaf mould. Tobias spent three weekends on his knees raking for them. He found eleven. The twelfth turned up in March, pressed under the rhubarb and bright as the day it was cut, and Mabry tacked it on the cote roof where the wire ended. From the lane, she said, you could see the whole trail now, climbing from the pear to the chimney like a wish that had been given a route.
