Black and grey fine line tattoos of star constellations on two crossed forearms, placed on the forearm.

Star constellation tattoos on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two crossed forearms each carry a small constellation tattoo made of tiny star shapes joined by dotted lines. The upper arm's design has three branches meeting at a central star, while the lower arm's design is a more angular cluster of stars. The photograph is in black and white, with the dark ink contrasting against the pale skin and a light fabric background.

Dear Nell,

The wind took the big top's left pole at Hexham and we spent Tuesday night holding ropes while the fairground lights sputtered out one by one. Dad says we'll be in Carlisle by the weekend if the lorry starts. I have the star chart you sent folded into my coat, the one with the three arms, and I have been checking it against the sky every night from the back step of the caravan, because the stall needs a new board and I promised Mrs Ashby I would paint the constellations properly this time.

You will laugh, but the Y you drew is wrong. The middle star should sit lower, almost on the line of the lower arm, or the whole thing looks like a fork someone dropped. I checked it twice with the lamp on the step and the sky agrees with me, not you. The other one, the angular one with the hook at the top, I have made into a little cup on the board, with a pinprick for every star so the children can join them up with their fingers.

Last night a boy paid his penny to stand at the telescope and asked me which star his grandad was. I said I did not know, which was the truth, and he looked so let down that I gave him the hook instead and told him it was a shepherd's crook, which it is not. He went off happy. I expect you would have corrected me.

Write back to Carlisle. Tell me the Y is wrong. Tell me you miss the sound of the generator.

Love, Bea
