Star constellations on wrist and forearm
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two black and white photographs show a wrist, hand and forearm with small constellation tattoos made of dots joined by thin lines. The stars are small, dark and evenly spaced, with one cluster on the back of the hand and a larger pattern running along the forearm. The plain lined paper background keeps the focus on the skin and the delicate linework.

Dad taught me the sky the way other fathers taught their kids to whistle, on the slag heap above Glebe Row with a torch held between us and nobody else awake. He would take my hand and walk his thumb from one star to the next, saying the names like he was reading out a shift roster. Orion first, always, because it was the easiest to find and the hardest to forget. Then the Plough, then the little scatter he called the Dropped Bolts, which he swore had fallen out of a pit prop somewhere over Wales.

The winter the cage jammed at four hundred feet, we sat in the church hall with the lamps turned low and the women passing round tea in chipped mugs. Somebody read the list of names off a sheet of lined paper. I kept my eyes on the window, where the sky was clear for once, and I found the Dropped Bolts without meaning to. Dad was in the lower seam with eleven others. Nobody in that hall had anything useful to say, so we said nothing and drank the tea.
They brought them up on the Thursday, all twelve, grey and quiet, and Dad came home with a bruise on his temple and a pencil still in his top pocket. That night he sat at the kitchen table and drew the sky for me on a sheet of lined paper, joining each dot with one careful line until the whole of it fitted inside my palm. He tapped the last star and said, there, that's where we are. I still trace it when the nights run long, and it comes out the same every time, one line after another.
