The lantern was still warm when Nell Garrow found it on the sill, its tin eye pricked out in a ring of seven points. Her father had gone up the hill at dusk with the brass lamp and the bad cough, and he had not come down. Nell wiped soot from the glass with her sleeve and read the star on the lid the way he had taught her, from the centre outwards.

Above the ridge the cloud had come in thick over Harrow Wood, and the village below had gone to bed without its lights. The old women said the wood was where the sky leaned down to drink. Nell took the spare lantern, the one with a cut-glass diamond set in its door so the flame threw a hard white point across the bracken, and she went up the path past the gamekeeper's cottage, where the window was dark.

At the clearing she found him sitting against an oak with his coat folded under his head and his face turned up. Beyond him the cloud had parted, and in the gap a pale face looked down, the same face her mother had worn in the sketch above the hearth, cheeks soft as chalk, hair loose in the drift of vapour. He lifted one finger and pointed. Nell held up the lantern until the light found the ring of stars on the tin, and the eye on its lid opened into a long bright glare.

'She's not gone,' he said. 'She's only lost her way down.' Nell set the lantern on the root beside him and turned its eye towards the sky. By morning the mist had lifted, and the village saw a single beam slanting up from Harrow Wood, steady as a nail, guiding the carts home.
