Hand tattoo with a burgundy suit

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A seated man in a burgundy suit, waistcoat and dark tie rests one hand on his raised knee, showing dark tattoo work across the back of the hand and wrist. The tattoo detail is small and partly shadowed, so its motifs cannot be made out clearly. The warm wooden cabinet, blue socks and black boots fill the frame, with the face cropped out.

The client came on a Thursday, when the light through the shop window turned the teak cabinet the colour of strong tea. He sat on it while she measured him, one leg crossed over the other, and rapped his rings on the lid as though counting out time. She did not ask about the rings. She asked whether he wanted the waistcoat single or double breasted, and he said he wanted it to look like something a man could leave a room in.

Three fittings later the suit was finished, and the cabinet still held the offcuts in its bottom drawer: nine yards of blue lining her late husband had bought in 1974 and never once used, because he had been waiting for a reason. Ada lifted the lid, ran a thumb over the silk, and cut a square the size of a palm.

When he came back for the final collection she slipped the square into the breast pocket, blue against the wine. "For the socks," she said. He looked at her for a long moment, then laughed, the rings clicking on the wood, and said he had been wearing the wrong blue all along. She did not tell him he was right. She just put the kettle on.
