Black and grey forearm tattoo with fish

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the inner forearm and shows a shaded figure or face, with a fish, possibly a koi, and soft cloud-like shapes around it. The work uses smooth greyscale shading and fine detail, with darker tones for depth. The forearm is crossed over the body in front of a red jacket and white shirt, and the tattoo is shown in soft, even lighting.

The lock keeper at Stoke Basin swore the koi were older than my boat, and I half believed him the evening the big orange one came up under the stern while I was coiling the bow line. Nobody else fed them. I did, with the heel ends of a Warburtons loaf, because my uncle always had, and because by six o'clock the cut went the colour of pewter and the fish rose out of it like coins thrown from a bridge.

Tomasz lived on the narrowboat moored alongside, a hull he had worked over every spring for thirty years, pale grey on grey, so that from the towpath it looked as if weather had settled on the paint. He kept a drawing pinned inside his cabin door of a face half lost in shadow. That was Piotr, his brother, who went through the ice on the Trent the winter they were nineteen. Tomasz never spoke of it. He only said Piotr hated being looked at straight on, so he had painted him the way water shows a man, from the side and a little under.

The evening he finally came out with a flask and sat on my step, he asked me to hold the torch against his cabin panel. The clouds had gone dull in the lamplight, the koi had gathered beneath us, and somewhere in the grey wash a face was turning towards the water. I had walked past it a hundred times without seeing it. Tomasz unscrewed the flask, poured the last of the tea into the cut, and watched the fish take it.
