Star quote in fine line script
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a handwritten quotation set across several lines in thin black linework, with three small five-pointed stars beneath the final line. The lettering is uneven and sketchy, in a loose, casual hand. The ink is solid black against pale skin, and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the text.

The lamp on the sea wall had gone dark again by the time Mother sent me down to the eel boat, and the marsh took the path from under my boots before I had gone a hundred yards. I stopped where I stood, the way Grandfather had taught me, and let the sky come up over the reeds one star at a time.

He had been blind for eleven winters, but he still named the sky for me in the sluice house, pressing a cold thumb into my palm for each one. Lyra, he would say. The lazy W. The Plough, which the fen men call the Wagon. Then he would tap my hand twice and tell me the old thing again: that he had loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night, and that the dark was only a room you had not yet learned the shape of.
The eel boat was not where it should have been. I found it by the faint silver of the water, where the stars lay flat on the surface beside it, so that for a moment I was rowing across the heavens. Halfway out I counted three lights low on the water, steady and small, and they did not move when I did. I knew them for the staithe lanterns Mother lit every night I was out, and I pulled toward them until the reeds gave way to mud.
When I got back to the sluice house, Grandfather was awake in his chair with his face turned to the open door. I took his hand and tapped out three stars on his palm, the way he had taught me, and felt his fingers close over them. He said nothing. He only smiled at the dark, as if he could see every one of them.
