Stars with night sky and mountain bicycle scene
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two large stars and one small star are tattooed on the forearm. The upper star is filled with a dotted night sky, with a crescent moon and a plane-like shape, while the lower star holds a stippled mountain landscape with a bicycle. The linework is crisp and the shading is built from fine dots, all in black ink and grey tones against pale skin.

The last bus to Hexham left without Marnie, so she walked the lane with her father's old cycle clips still biting her ankles. Behind her the hills were going blue and the first stars were pushing through the sky like pins through card. Her brother Tom had promised to wait at the cattle grid, but the grid was empty, just a rusted gate and a sign for a farm that had gone to holiday lets years ago.

She sat on the verge and fished the folded map from her jacket. Tom had drawn the route in biro, a wobbly line over the Pennines with a star at every summit he meant to reach. Three stars, he'd written beside the last one, and a plane, and a bloody great moon. She had laughed at him for that. Now the moon was rising over the ridge exactly as he'd drawn it, a thin silver fingernail, and somewhere up there a plane was blinking its way east towards Newcastle.
She heard the tyres before she saw the lamp. Tom came round the bend standing on the pedals, grinning like a fool, his bike rattling with a spare tin of paint strapped to the crossbar. He threw it down on the grass. Look, he said, and tapped the map with a muddy finger. You're still on the route. You've been on it the whole time.
She took the biro from behind her ear and drew a fourth star at the summit, small and crooked, and handed it back to him.
