Cat head with bow on inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cat's head in profile, turned slightly upward, with a small bow tied at the neck. The outline is a single thin line with minimal shading, and the eyes and nose are drawn with simple detail. The ink is a reddish-brown rather than black, and the design sits alone in the centre of the frame on pale skin.

The snow had already closed the lower road when the cat came up the track behind my mule, tail high, as if she had booked the pass herself. Mari at the refuge said she belonged to nobody, which in my experience meant she belonged to whoever fed her last. I was carrying letters for the valley post office, three weeks of them, tied in oilcloth against my chest.

She rode in the mail satchel after the first hour, head poking out of the flap, and she kept turning her face up toward the ridge as though she could read the weather in the cloud. The ribbon at her throat was red, faded by sun, and I asked her once whether someone had loved her enough to tie it. She only blinked, which I took for no. At the saddle stone where the wind cuts hardest, she stood up on the satchel, sniffed the air, then jumped down into the drift and walked ahead of us without once sinking.
We followed her down the far side in the blue hour. Where the path forked over the scree she waited, looking back, until I chose the left branch, the one marked with a cairn of white stones. The right fork had taken a carter the spring before. I do not think she knew that. I think she simply did not like the smell of it.
At the post house in the village I untied the satchel and found her curled on top of the last letter, the one addressed to a widow who had been waiting for it since autumn. The ribbon had come loose. I tied it again, tighter, and the cat let me, then stepped off the counter and out into the lamplight, leaving one grey hair on the envelope like a full stop.
