Millennium Falcon and red roses on a limb

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A bold black outlined tattoo of the Millennium Falcon starship is framed by two red roses with green leaves. The ship is shaded in grey tones with a metallic look, while the roses have red petals with darker shading. The same tattoo appears twice in a side by side composition against a dark background.

Dear Priya,

You were right about the reunion hall. Somebody has hung the same paper chains from our Year Nine Christmas disco, and the caretaker still calls everyone "you lot" as though we'd never left. I didn't stay long. I stood by the squash table looking for Callum and found instead the glass case by the gym where the model ships still sit. Ours is there, the freighter we glued together in Mr Okafor's Tuesday club, the one with the wonky dish and the cockpit we painted with nail varnish because the enamel ran out.

Someone had propped it on a folded programme. The roses we'd drawn on the cardboard base, from a sheet of red felt, had faded to the colour of weak tea. I thought about how we swore we'd build a proper one when we were grown, something that actually flew, and how neither of us ever did.

Callum turned up at half nine smelling of cheap cider and asked if I still had the instructions. I said they were in a shoebox under my bed, the same shoebox that holds your letters. He laughed and said he'd kept his grey paint, the exact tin, and had found a pot of roses in his mum's shed. We didn't say much more. We just stood there, two people who once passed a tube of glue between them like a bomb.

I'm writing because I want you to know I took the ship home in a carrier bag. It's on my windowsill now, dish bent back into shape, and I'm going to fix the cockpit properly this weekend. Come and see it. Bring the instructions.

Love, Nadia
