R2-D2 and red rose on an upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A fully coloured tattoo of the droid R2-D2 sits on the upper arm, with a red rose and green leaves below it and an orange sunburst behind. The robot is rendered with bold dark outlines, metallic grey and silver shading, and blue and red details. Soft purple and green washes surround the design against the skin, which is shown from the shoulder down, with the person's face not visible.

Mrs Okonedo had left the droid on the landing with a note tucked under its dome: 'Mind the beeping, it's only the lift.' He carried it up to the flat he shared with his father, who had been a radio engineer in Leicester before his knees gave out. His father took one look and said the thing was from the old films, the ones with the desert and the bearded men. 'A tin bucket with opinions,' he said, and reached for the soldering iron anyway.
Over three nights they worked. The silver panels came off one at a time and lay on newspaper like spent cartridges, each dent coaxed back with the heel of a shoe. Ravi painted the stripes with a brush from the pound shop. Somewhere in the second night the droid chirped, a bright rising note, and his father laughed so hard he had to sit down on the kitchen lino.
On the third morning the sun came up over the car park and threw orange across the glass of the bus shelter below. Ravi carried the droid out to the balcony, and his father wheeled himself after them with a rose cut from Mrs Okonedo's window box, its stem wrapped in kitchen foil. The droid turned its head towards the light, beeped twice, and rolled to the rail to watch the city wake up.
