A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told the rigger was for the fine work, and she had never once been trusted with it. Harold Pask said the sign for Marjorie's hat shop had to be written in one breath, no lifting, every loop closing on itself like a sailor's knot. "Lift the brush and the customer sees you thinking," he said, and tapped the mahl stick against the bench until she stopped fidgeting.

Marjorie wanted STAY BEAUTIFUL across the front window, in her late husband's hand, copied from a Christmas card Arthur had signed for her every year for forty years. Nell kept the card in her apron pocket, soft at the folds. The capitals looped back over themselves, and the S was crossed by a single stroke that ran long and came back again. She practised it on old newspaper until her wrist ached and the size reek of the enamel made her eyes water.

On the Friday the board went up, the sea wind shoved the door open and rain came in sideways. Marjorie stood in the wet with her handbag clutched to her chest and read the words aloud, slowly, the way you would read a telegram. "That's Arthur," she said. "Every word of it."

Nell didn't tell her the loops had taken three goes and one swear word from Harold. She wiped the rigger clean, capped the tin, and let the old woman keep her husband's hand in the window. Some lines don't need to be perfect, she thought. They only need to be unbroken.
