Stay Strong script on the wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows a pale hand with yellow painted nails, curled up at the top of the frame, with the words Stay Strong in flowing, joined script on the inner wrist. The lettering is drawn with smooth, even dark linework and solid fill, with no visible shading. The ink is a dark blue-black against light skin and a dark blue fabric backdrop.

Dear Tom, the kettle has boiled twice while I've been sat at this table, and Mrs Pargeter has just put her head round the door to ask whether the roof is coming in. It isn't, though the gutter over the scullery sings like a kettle itself whenever the wind comes off the estuary, and I have stopped listening to it the way you stopped listening to Father's cough.

The Marigold came in on Thursday with her mainsail in ribbons and no sign of Dafydd Rees, who you will remember as the boy who ate all the pilchards in the galley. The harbourmaster says he was seen on the Gull Rock, waving a shirt, but the shirt has not been brought in yet, so we are all waiting. I have been down to the slip every morning since, wrapped in Father's oilskin, counting the boats the way he taught us, not out loud, just under the breath.
I found your letter from March in the tin with the buttons. You wrote that the sea makes a man small and then makes him brave, and I thought that a cruel thing to say to a girl who has only ever wanted to be small enough to sit beside you in the boat. But you were right about the words. Father cut Stay Strong into the lintel of the boathouse the year the Marigold was launched, and the letters have gone soft with salt, and I run my thumb along them whenever I pass, the way you used to run yours along the rail when you were trying not to be afraid.
So here is what I am asking. Come home and tell me it is only the wind, and I will believe you. If you cannot, then send word by any ship that puts in, and I will walk down to the slip and stand there until I see a sail. Your loving sister, Maud.
