You are sixteen the spring the Mallow stops at Hatch Lock with her engine ticking and nobody aboard willing to say why. Your father sits on the cabin step with a tin of shag and a carpenter's pencil behind his ear, counting rivets along the gunwale the way other men count change. He has not spoken since the Thames turned brown in March. You tie the mooring line twice round the bollard because he taught you that, and because your hands need something to do.

On the third night he opens the locker under the bunk and lays three things on the table in a row. A brass ring the size of a bread roll, worn smooth where a thumb used to rest. A folding rule with one edge chewed by a dog long dead. A pocket watch whose glass is cracked across the hour. He slides them together until they touch at their corners, and the ring, the rule and the watch make a neat little triangle in the lamplight. Your mother's, he says. Then he says nothing else.

In the morning you carry the watch up to the lock cottage. Mrs Fenwick keeps a slate by her door for boats heading downstream, and she reads your face before she reads the watch. Tell him the Mallow is still here, she says, and he'll come down. You take the chalk and write the boat's name. Then, because your father never once in your life finished a letter without it, you add the last word beneath and leave it there for the next boat to read. Always.
