Mechanical castle with legs on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large fantasy castle with mechanical legs, chimneys, turrets and small windows stands on a rocky outcrop against a blue sky with clouds. The rendering uses soft shading and detailed highlights on the metal and stone, with a muted palette of blues, greys, purples and greens. The design fills the thigh, with the castle centred and mountains fading out around its base.

The castle came down off the hill the night the bell at St Orrin's rang thirteen instead of twelve. It walked on its iron legs across the slate roofs of Carrick Mere as though the roofs were only a field it had been asked to cross. Nobody in the lower town saw it arrive. They saw its smoke first, black across the moon, and then the chimneys, forty of them, each with a small red lamp lit inside.

Old Maud Pellan kept a fish stall under the arches by the canal, and she was the only one who went out with a bucket of cold herring and set it down in the road. The castle stopped above her. Its legs creaked like ship's timbers in a swell, and a door in its belly opened no wider than a cat. A voice came out of it, very tired, and asked whether there was a place in Carrick Mere where a thing that size could stand still until morning without frightening the gulls.
Maud told it about the old tannery yard behind the church, where the walls were high and the cobbles had been laid by men who expected bigger carts. The castle thanked her and asked what it owed. She said a hot coal every hour through the dark, since the lamplighters had all gone to bed and the fires in the lower chimneys were out. So the castle kept its lamps burning and Maud fed it coals from her brazier, one by one, until the church clock struck five.
At first light it lifted its legs and walked back up the hill. In the bottom of Maud's bucket, under the herring, lay a single brass gear as big as a pie dish, warm to the touch. On the hill the castle was a grey smudge with one red lamp still burning in its highest turret, and Maud swore it winked at her before the mist took it.
