Steamboat Willie Mickey and rose on a lower leg

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Mickey Mouse in the style of Steamboat Willie stands at a ship's wheel in black, grey and cream, with bold black outlines. Below him sits a red rose with green shading and leaves, all outlined in black. The collage includes a full view and two close-up crops that show the solid colour fills and the shading on the rose and figure.

Dear Dad,

The lift's been broken since Tuesday, so I climbed all fourteen floors with the council envelope in one hand and the rolled-up cinema programme in the other. Mr Pryce on the ground floor reckons the Regal in town is going to show the old silent pictures on Sunday afternoons, the ones with the cartoon ship and the tinny piano. You'd have loved it. You always said the Mersey ferries were the only steamers worth a whistle.

I sat out on the balcony after and watched the car park go orange. The rose the housing lot planted in the spring has finally flowered, one red bloom forced out between the railings, and the wind keeps knocking its petals onto the concrete. Kids from block C pick them up and press them into their school jotters. I can count a dozen red smears on the walkway from here, like somebody's been dropping sweets.

Here's the thing I wanted to tell you. The mouse on the screen, the one with the great round ears, is steering that boat through a squall with one hand and whistling along with his mouth pursed up. He never once looks worried. I thought about that all the way down the stairs this morning, and all the way back up. So I'm going Sunday, and I'm sitting right at the front, and I'm whistling.

Love, Jean

P.S. I've tucked a petal in this envelope. Don't let the postman see it.
