Step-by-step rose line drawing
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
The sheet shows six stages of a rose bud drawn in bold black outline, building from a single curved petal to a full bud with sepals, leaves and a thorned stem. The linework is solid and uniform with no shading, and the image is entirely black on white. The stages are arranged in two rows of three, with the caption How to draw a flower across the bottom.

You asked why I never finished the drawing you left on the kitchen table, so here is the secret the sheet doesn't tell you. Start with one curl, the way the porters start a shunt, slow and sure, and don't look at the paper while your hand is deciding. The first petal is only a hook. The second one wraps round it like a hand round a lamp, and that is the bit you will want to rush. Don't.
By the third stage the bud has its shape, and the wide cup underneath is the easy part, a bowl with the bottom sagging. Mr Oakes from the signal box laughed when I showed him and said I'd drawn a teapot. Maybe so. Then the leaves come, two at each side, pointed like the tips of a ticket punch, and the sepals that cling to the base. You must draw the sepals last, even though they sit underneath, because they're the thing that holds the whole thing up.
The stem is where I lost my nerve. It runs straight down past the platform edge, thin as a pencil lead, and the thorns come off it at angles, as if someone had flicked them there. I stopped at the thorns for a whole afternoon while the 4.10 came and went. In the end I just put them in, one after another, and the rose looked finished before I believed it.
Love, Aunt Vi
