Step by step rose drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows six numbered panels that build a rose from a small bud to a full open flower with leaves. The early steps use red outlines for the new shapes, and later steps add black petal lines, leaf veins and shading hatching. The drawing is monochrome black on white with small red accents, and the steps are arranged in a neat grid.

Start with the red pencil, Danny, and don't press. Those first lines are only a promise. Make a cup shape, a little bud no bigger than your thumbnail, and leave it lopsided if you must. Your grandad always said a rose that is too tidy looks like it was ironed onto the paper.

The second step is where people give up. The petals wrap round the first ones like a hand closing, and you'll want to rush the outside curl. Don't. Keep the red lines light so you can rub them out later with the crust from the bread bin. By the fourth panel the flower should look like it is leaning towards the window, as if it heard the kettle go on.
The black ink comes only once you've decided where the light falls. Hatch the shadow under each petal with short strokes, all running the same way, the way rain runs off the back step. Leaves go last. Give each one a vein down the middle and let one curl over its edge, because nothing in a garden sits perfectly flat.
I've left the sketchbook on the sideboard under the teapot. The page with all six panels is the one with the coffee ring. When you've finished, go out to the bush by the shed and cut one bloom, then put it in the jam jar on the sill so the drawing has something real to be honest about.
