The third week of the survey, Marjorie Pike stopped trusting the lines on the chart and began trusting the dashes instead. The harbour wall at Skerrow Point had been drawn by three different men, and each had marked the old breakwater differently: solid for the stone they had seen, dashed for the stone they had only been told about. Her pencil kept going back to the dashed ones. A triangle of sea lay between the lighthouse, the slipway and the drowned chapel, and she had nested the bearings inside one another until the page looked like a bird's foot pressed into wet clay.

On Thursday the fog came in off the water and sat on the chart table like a wet cloth. She bored her compass into the sand at each corner of the triangle and walked the lines with a boy from the fish stall, who carried the sounding weight and counted under his breath. Where the bearings crossed he made a small chevron mark on his own palm with a stub of chalk, pointing the way the tide was running, and she copied it onto the sheet without asking why. He said his grandfather had done the same for the herring boats.
By Saturday the three triangles had folded into one, with a single arrow pointing into the empty middle. Marjorie drew a fine white line from the arrow to the chapel, then a second, then a third, until the whole sheet was bright with what the sea had hidden. She filed the chart under the name of the boy, who had asked to see it. He looked at it for a long while, then tapped the dashed line near the slipway and said, that one's still wrong, and she laughed because he was right.
