Stippled curved claw design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A single curved shape resembling a claw or horn, tapering to a fine point at the top, is drawn on white paper. It is filled with dense black stippling that shades from light grey at the edges to solid black at the base, with small line marks scattered along the surface. The composition is a single centred motif with plenty of empty space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The horn had already cracked twice when Mairi lifted it from the sea-bull's skull and wrapped it in oilskin. The crew wanted it thrown back. Her father had always said that anything which came up out of deep water was owed a passage, so that spring the boat carried a curved black horn in the bow locker where the salt cod should have been.

They sailed north past the Shetland skerries with the wind backing and the men muttering. Each night the horn seemed heavier, or so Tam swore, and the grey dots on its flank looked darker as the lamp burned low. Mairi sat on the coaming and counted the fine lines at its edge the way her mother counted stitches, and told herself a horn was only a horn.

On the ninth night the fog lifted and a line of breakers showed where no chart put any rock. The horn, when she unwrapped it, lay in her palm pointing along the surf. She told the helmsman to follow it. He did, and they ran the reef's length until the water went flat and green. Tam asked what it had done. She said nothing. It had only pointed.

At the harbour mouth she set the horn on the quay stone, and the tide came up and took it back with a long sigh. Nobody paid the crew for that trip, but the fish were landed and the men were home. Mairi kept the small black flake that had broken from its tip in her apron pocket for years after, and never once let it get wet.
