A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the years after the salt rivers dried, the moon began to slip. Everyone in Tarrow Hollow knew it, because the tide-wells rose at the wrong hour and the goats would not lie down at night. The old women said the moon was a cord of silver bands worn thin along its lower edge, and that someone had to climb the Ninefold Mast and knot it back. Nobody had climbed it in forty winters.

Mabry Quill was the cooper's youngest girl and the only one who could follow a knot by touch. She took a coil of tarred hemp, a bone needle, and a lantern her grandmother had kept oiled for the funerals. She climbed for three days. At the top the moon was not round but a hollow bowl of light, and its edge was fraying into threads that drifted off like pale smoke.

She worked the knot the way her grandmother had taught her, over one band and under the next, never cutting the line, so the path would have no end. Each time the thread passed under, the moon gave a low groan, like a barge settling against its moorings. When the last loop closed, the crescent stood firm and the tide-wells went quiet. Mabry sat on the mast with her palms bleeding and waited for the thanks the old women had promised.

Nothing came. Instead, far below, the village lights went out one by one, and a new light rose out of the dark where the sea used to be. The fishers saw it and sang. Mabry understood only that she would have to climb back every year, because a knot that never ends is never finished, and the moon must be mended before it can rest. She looked at her torn hands, then at the hemp coiled beside her, and went down to fetch more.
