Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a stylised swan made from smooth, tapering curved lines, with its neck curled into a spiral at the base. The wings are drawn as separate sweeping strokes with grey shading that fades along each line. The design is centred on a plain, light background in black and grey pencil.

The ferryman of Caddle Water would take no coin from anyone who had not first lost something in the reeds. So when the miller's youngest came down to the landing with his boots full of river and no money at all, Oswen Tallis only pointed at the boat and said the crossing was the same price either way.

The boy had come to find the swan. Everyone in Harrowmere knew the old king had shut the white birds into the marsh after his queen drowned among them, and that the last of them, a cob with a neck coiled like a rope left out to dry, still flew the grey channels at dusk. The miller's son wanted a feather. Oswen had seen the cob once, when he was young, turning slow circles above the sluice with its wings held out stiff as oars, and he remembered it did not look like a bird at all but like a thing drawn in one unbroken stroke.

They found it at the spiral of the third bend, where the water went quiet and the reeds stood up like spears. The swan lifted its head. The boy reached, and Oswen saw the wing lift too, slowly, each long feather fading from ink to ash toward its tip, as if the bird were only half made and the rest of it was still waiting for someone to finish the line.

The boy never took a feather. He came home with river on his boots and told his mother the swan had let him look at it, which was all anyone was ever given.
