Ribs · Colour · Photo

A blue cartoon alien character, Stitch, is tattooed on the side of the torso. The linework is bold and dark, with soft blue shading for the body and ears and a pink tongue as the main accent. The tattoo sits centrally in a close crop, with a dark waistband and loose top at the edges of the frame.

The creature turned up in the lost property cupboard at Harwich on a Tuesday, perched on a box of unclaimed umbrellas and licking the handle of one as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world. Nobody on the ferry would own him. The purser swore he had come aboard inside a crate of pineapples, the chief steward insisted he had been a cabin boy's pet in 1962, and a Dutch lorry driver said he had seen him waving from the back of a container on the Rotterdam road. Maureen kept him in a biscuit tin with the lid propped open and read him the shipping forecast each evening, which he seemed to prefer to the football results.

By the end of March the paperwork demanded he be sent back to wherever he belonged. They tried a tin of condensed milk on the harbour wall, then a torch, then a very polite note. He only looked at the water and tilted his head, and when a gull landed beside him he unfolded his enormous ears, flapped them twice, and rose over the breakwater like a kite with nothing holding its string.

Maureen wrote on the form, under Collected by, the words owner unknown. Then, after a moment, she crossed out unknown and wrote the sea, which the form did not allow, so she filed it under umbrellas.
