Stitch tattoo on the ribs

Ribs · Colour · Photo

A blue cartoon character, seated with its back turned, is tattooed on the side of a torso. The linework is smooth and bold with soft shading on the ears and belly, and pink and blue ink dominate. The tattoo sits centrally on the ribs against a bare skin background, with a black lace bra and a striped waistband visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nani had been trying to get the blue creature to face the sea for three days. It had come up out of the surf at Kalapana wearing a fishing net like a cape, all its limbs tucked under it, and it had refused to turn round since. It sat on the sand with its enormous ears folded back and its back to the water, the way a child sits when it has decided the whole world is wrong.

The harbourmaster wanted it moved on. The ferry man wanted it charged for the seat. Old Kekoa from the chandlery brought it a bowl of poi and a tin of biscuits with a ship painted on the lid, and the creature sniffed the bowl, then the tin, then ate both with a noise like a motorbike labouring up a hill. Nobody could say where it had come from. It had no name it would answer to, only a squeaking hinge of a laugh when it was pleased.

On the fourth morning the wind swung north and carried the smell of rain and burnt sugar from the far side of the island. The creature stood up. Its ears lifted. It walked straight past the crowd and past Nani's outstretched hands, down to the tideline, and sat again, this time facing the water, where a small red kite was tugging at its line above the reef.

Nani never learned whether it was watching the kite or the boat that had left it there. She only saw it turn once, very slowly, to check she was still watching, and then it went back to gazing out. She left the poi on the wall. Some visitors, she decided, were allowed to keep their backs to you until they were ready.
