The frost had taken the Stanegate by the time Ruso lost the rider's scent, and the wax tablet in the leather satchel was already cracking in the cold. The bridge at Vindolanda would hold until the thaw, and the rider was to come back before the snow closed the passes.

The dog knew the man's smell of horse sweat and pine resin. He followed the prints pressed into the white verge, dark where the mud broke through the frost, and when they doubled back at the ford he circled the alders until he found the boot marks climbing the bank. Each paw he set down beside them left a neat black print in the rime, and the trail ran on like a line of dark stitches pulled through white cloth.

Gaius Tettius was sitting against a milestone with his ankle wrapped in his own cloak. He had been saying the message aloud to keep himself from sleeping, and his voice had gone hoarse on the word thaw. When Ruso pushed a cold muzzle into his palm he laughed and said the tablet had been wrong all along, that it should have said only come home.

He pulled out the satchel and held the seal up to the grey light. The wax had softened in his warm fist and printed itself red across his palm. Ruso lay down against his good leg and rested his head on the man's knee, and they waited together for the cart from the fort.
