Nell had run out of white cotton by the Tuesday, so the stitches on the new doll were dark, pulled from the lining of her late father's pit coat. Ada sat on the rag rug and watched her mother work the needle through the calico face, drawing each seam tight until the mouth settled into a crooked line that never quite smiled.

The doll was for the Miners' Institute bazaar, where the Sunday school sold raffle tickets and the Coleman boys always won the prize for the biggest marrow. Nell had promised the committee a proper doll with proper hair, and she cut that hair from the tail of an old horse blanket, long and straight and as black as the seam at Hollin Pit. She sewed the dress last, a dark stuff patterned with curls like the smoke that rolled off the coke ovens on a still night.

On Saturday the bazaar was rained off. Ada carried the doll down the lane anyway, its stitched feet knocking against her knees, and found the hall empty except for old Walt Bradshaw sweeping water toward the drain. He looked at the doll for a long time, then at the child, and said a face with stitches for a mouth was the first thing to make him laugh since the funeral. He paid a shilling for it and then, when he thought she wasn't looking, slipped a second one into her coat pocket, folded small.

That evening Ada passed the Bradshaws' front window on the way home and saw the doll sitting on the sill, facing the lane, its black hair catching the lamplight as if someone had combed it.
