Cartoon penguin at a piano on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon penguin with large eyes sits behind a piano keyboard, with its orange feet resting on a cloud-like base. The penguin has bold black outlines and flat, solid fills, set inside an oval with a blue and purple watercolour-style background. Four-pointed sparkles float around the oval, and the colour ink dominates the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The piano arrived on the back of the Gallagher lorry in March, wrapped in tarpaulin, and by the time the Wexley Travelling Fair set up on the Esplanade it had a penguin sitting at it. Nobody had ordered a penguin. Dolly Rourke, who ran the coconut shy, swore it had been in the crate with the cloud backdrop, and nobody argued with Dolly before her second cup of tea.

Jonah Pell, the youngest of the ride lads, was charged with polishing the piano every morning. He always found the penguin already awake, round-eyed and patient, feet resting on the pedals as though they had been made for them. It played only four notes, a rising pattern like sparks off a catherine wheel, and each time it played them a light on the Ferris wheel blinked a half-second late.

By August the fair was losing money. Sea fog rolled in every evening and the crowds drifted off to the bingo hall instead. Jonah sat on an upturned crate and asked the penguin what it wanted. It pressed the same four keys, slower this time, and the fog thinned over the water like a sheet being pulled back off a bed.

The next morning the Esplanade was full of people who had walked down from the terraces because they had heard a tune through their bedroom windows. Dolly sold out of tea by nine. The penguin never said a word, but when the crate was packed for the road it had left a small heap of feathers on the stool, and Jonah swept them up and kept one in his coat pocket.
