Sally and Jack Skellington on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas with her eyes closed, holding a small stitched doll, with Jack Skellington's grinning head floating above her. Bold black outlines define the figures, with soft grey shading on the skin tones and pink and red used for her dress and hair. The design is centred on a plain background, with another tattoo partly visible at the top right edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The woman at window six put a rag doll on my counter as if it were a passport. It had red wool hair, a patched pink dress and black stitches looping across its face, and its eyes were sewn shut. I asked what she was declaring. She said, 'Nothing she needs to know about,' which I typed exactly, because the form has no box for that.

Behind her the queue at Harrowgate Crossing shuffled under the strip lights, and a child was crying somewhere in Polish. I turned the doll over and found a smaller row of stitches along its back, crooked and a shade too pale, not matching the rest. 'That's mine,' the woman said. 'My first proper seam. My mother did everything else before her hands went stiff.' She didn't say what the doll was for. I didn't ask.

I thought about my own mother at the kitchen table, humming while she darned my school socks. The woman hummed something under her breath too, low and tuneless, and I couldn't tell whether it was a lullaby or a warning. The scanner blinked green behind her.

I stamped the form and slid the doll back across the counter. 'Keep her warm,' I said. The woman tucked the stitched face against her shoulder and walked out into the rain. Above the car park, a pale moon hung low with its mouth pulled into a grin, and I laughed out loud, alone in my booth, because somebody had to.
