Street art sleeve with umbrella girl and rats
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The sleeve shows a silhouetted girl holding an umbrella, a rat, a bunch of balloons and a red heart balloon set against a brick wall with smoky grey shading. The linework is bold and the shading is soft and sketchy, with a graffiti-like, stencil feel. Black and grey ink dominates, with the red heart as the only strong colour, and three photographs show the sleeve from different sides.

The cutter came back to the wall on the third night of rain, when the brick was dark enough to hide a stencil and the council van had gone home. Nell had a sheet of card under one arm, a tin of black paint in a carrier bag, and a grudge against the man from the housing office who had said the terrace would be knocked down by spring. Under the railway arch the rats came out to watch, as they always did, sitting along the kerb like men waiting for a bus.

She laid the card flat and held it steady with her knee. The girl on the stencil had a hem that flared like a bell and an umbrella the wind kept trying to take. Nell sprayed in short bursts, careful of the drips, and the fog of paint rose and mixed with the damp so the wall seemed to breathe. The biggest rat, grey at the ears, climbed the drainpipe for a better look and found the girl's face already drawn, half-turned, not looking at anyone in particular.
When the girl was finished, Nell took a red can from her coat pocket and sprayed one small heart on a string, a balloon drifting off the edge of the umbrella's shadow. Then she saw the string had snagged on a loose bracket and she could not quite leave it there. She tugged, the paint ran, and the heart stayed on the bracket, bright as a warning.
By morning the rain had washed the grey out of the kerb, but not the red. The rats had gone back down the drain. A bus driver stopped at the lights, saw the girl under her umbrella and thought, for no reason he could name, that somebody in the city was still keeping an appointment.
