Word strong in typewriter font on the wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the single word strong followed by a full stop, tattooed in a black typewriter-style font across the inner wrist and forearm. A white beaded bracelet with one black bead sits over the middle of the word, covering part of the letters. The skin is light and the background is a plain cream fabric, with the ink in solid black tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Ostle, the Remington in typing pool B has come back to me for the fourth time since Michaelmas, and this time I found the cause. Miss Dunmore swears it was not there when she typed the Hadley estate inventory on Thursday, but she also swears the machine has a temper, and I am inclined to believe the machine.

While I had the back off, I counted the hammers. Every letter in this building has been struck thousands of times, and the ones that take the worst punishment are the ones we use least in ordinary business: the r, the g, the t of words like strike, tragic and strong. In the waste bin under the desk I found a pile of spoilt sheets, each with the same single word typed over and over, always followed by a full stop pressed so hard it had punched clean through the paper. Nobody in pool B will own to it.

I have replaced the spring on the r hammer and oiled the rails until the carriage slides like a drawer in a good cabinet. The bead I have left in a saucer on your desk. I am told the girls have been arguing over whose it is, and none of them has yet asked whether it belongs to the machine or to the person who kept typing that word.

Yours faithfully, A. Cobb, Typewriter Mechanic. P.S. The full stop is genuine. I have not touched it, and I would not dare.
