Stretching cat on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person lies face down on pale sand with their bare back visible, head lowered and dark hair falling forward. A small, single-line outline tattoo of a cat in a stretched pose sits between the shoulder blades. The linework is thin and black, with no shading or colour, and the tattoo is placed centrally against a softly lit, minimal background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had been up the ladder since six, and the Bramleys were coming off the boughs faster than the crates could take them. Below, at the foot of the third row, the orchard cat was doing what she did every late afternoon in August. She lay flat on the warm earth, pushed her front paws out ahead of her, and dragged her back legs long until her spine made a bow.

Tomas, who had walked over from the cider press to help for the week, wiped his forearm across his face and asked whether the animal ever got up. "When the wasps go," Dilys said. "She's waiting on the wasps." He laughed, then watched the cat rise in one unhurried piece, tail curling into a question mark, and pad off along the wall as if the whole valley had been hers since before the Hallidays planted it.

The clouds came up over the hop fields a little before five, the colour of wet slate. Dilys climbed down with the last full crate on her hip and found the cat already tucked under the cart, eyes half shut, watching the sky with more interest than either of them. Tomas was still on the ladder, reaching for a fruit that clung just out of his grasp.

He gave up and came down. When the first fat drops hit the cobbles, he stood against the gatepost, arched his back, and pressed his palms into the wood until he let out a small groan of relief. Dilys didn't tell him he looked ridiculous. By dusk the crates were stacked under the tarpaulin, the rain had settled into a steady patter, and every apple was in.
