Striped animal tail across the back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo of a ringed tail with a fluffy tip curls in an S-shape down the centre of the back. Soft shading and fur-like texture give the tail a three-dimensional look, with dark bands alternating with grey. Pink and red tones appear in patches on the tip and along the upper section, and the rest of the image is plain skin.

Dear Owen, The creature came up the number three shaft in Dai Pritchard's snap tin, which I did not believe until I saw it on our kitchen table looking as put out as a magistrate. Ringed all the way down its length, black bands and grey like the seams they cut at the face, and a tip as fat and soft as a rosehip that has been rained on. Dai says it took a liking to the lamp room and nobody had the heart to put it back.

Mam says it is bad luck to have a thing with a tail that long in a house with a coal fire, and Mrs Hughes next door says it is worse luck to have one that sleeps on a man's boots. It climbs the banister with the tail going up behind it like a question mark that has got above itself. It steals the coal dust off the grate and leaves it in neat piles on the step, and when the men come off shift black to the eyes it sits on the windowsill and watches them wash as if they are the strange ones.

The strike came in March and the cat grew restless. It went to the back gate every evening and sat there with its tail held straight out, and on the Friday the new man from Merthyr came up the lane with his papers and it went for his ankles like the devil's own. Nobody has seen it since. This morning there was a tuft of pink fur on the sill, no bigger than a thumb, and Dai has pinned it to the calendar where the shift rota used to be.

I have told the children it was a fox. They do not believe me, and Owen, neither, if I am honest, quite do I.
