Seated cat tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a seated tabby-style cat, shown from behind with its head turned slightly and its tail curling up on the right. The cat is rendered in soft grey shading with fine strokes suggesting fur, against pale, smooth skin. The cat sits near the centre of the frame, with dark hair and a dangling earring visible at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have sat on the windowsill of the north tower for nine winters with your back to the room, because the room is where the lies are told. Below you the council of Ostmere argues over grain and bridges, and you keep your eyes on the courtyard, where the lamplighter's boy kicks a tin ball against the well.

Queen Ilse climbs the stairs on the night of the great frost, carrying a bowl of broth she has not touched. She sets it down and sits beside you without a word, and for a long time neither of you moves. Her hand rests on the cold stone. You can smell candle wax on her sleeve and the river beyond the walls, black and iron-coloured under the moon.

The council has voted to sell the mill at Carrow to the Duke of Thane, and the Queen has already signed her name beneath the decree. She tells you this as though you were the only one who would not carry it down the stairs. You do not turn. You tuck your tail round your paws and watch the boy, who has stopped kicking and is looking up at the tower.

When the bells ring midnight you rise, stretch, and step along the sill. Your tail brushes her wrist once, then again, then curls round it and stays there. In the morning the decree is still on the table, and the ink has run where her hand shook.
