Stylised cat tattoo on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised cat sits upright in profile, with a flowing, tapering body and a long tail that curls down and to the left. The linework is bold and dark, with soft grey and brown shading inside the body that gives it some depth. The tattoo is centred on the upper back, with the figure's head near the base of the neck and the tail sweeping towards the lower left of the frame.

Dear Mr Adeyemi, I am writing about the cat on the fourteenth floor, since you are the only person on the committee who has ever answered a letter. She sits on the concrete ledge outside the stairwell window every morning, upright, the way a clerk sits at a desk he does not intend to leave. Nobody on the block will say whose she is. Mrs Pryce on twelve calls her Smoke, because her body thins out at the top and at the bottom like something pulled through a draught, and her tail hangs past the rail in a long curl that swings whenever the wind comes off the car park.

Last Tuesday the lift stopped between floors again and the power went with it. I was fourteen flights from my own front door with a bag of shopping and a torch that had given up. I heard a scrape on the stairs below me and there she was, sitting on the landing step, waiting. She did not hurry. Every time I stopped to breathe she stopped too and looked back over her shoulder with her eyes half shut, as if she had heard this sort of complaint before. By the sixth floor I had stopped counting steps and started counting her tail flicks.
At the bottom the emergency door was propped open with a folded flyer for the Christmas bingo, and she slipped out through the gap into the dark before I could thank her. The next morning she was back on the ledge. The boarded flat on the ground floor, the one with the cracked number plate, had its window open an inch. I have not been able to find out who lives there, and I have stopped asking. Please tell the committee the stairwell light needs replacing. I would rather you tell them about the cat, but I suspect they would not believe me.
Yours faithfully, Hannah Greaves, Flat 14C
