Small cross tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A person lies on a white bed under a grey duvet, with one hand and bare legs visible. A small black tattoo resembling a cross or star sits on the wrist, drawn in thin, simple lines. The ink is dark grey-black against the skin, and the soft, neutral palette of the bedding frames the small mark.

Below, a fishing boat was feeling its way toward the gap. I could hear its engine stutter and cough, then steady. Nobody had asked me to light the wick by hand, but nobody else was there to do it, and the mechanism had jammed with the damp.
I struck the match three times before it caught. Then I scratched a small cross into the brass housing with the point of my knife, the way my father had marked the bearings, four short lines he called the crossing marks, so the next keeper would know where the light had been true. It was a foolish thing to do with a blade in the dark, but my hand was steady when the beam finally swept out over the water.
At dawn the boat came round the point with its nets full and its crew shouting my name across the swell. Mrs Gilchrist brought up a loaf still warm from her oven. I did not tell anyone the mark on the housing was for me. It was only a star, really, a small one to steer by, and the lamp has held true beneath it ever since.
