Floral tattoo on a forearm beside a laptop
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand and forearm rest on a silver laptop under a white blanket with grey marbled veining. The forearm carries a black and grey tattoo of flowers and leaves, with the detail concentrated near the wrist and elbow side. The composition is a top-down shot with soft, even lighting and the tattoo as the clear focal point.

You'll want to sit nearer the stove, because the wind comes off the breakwater at Porthleven like it has a grudge against the chimney. Now. The Hallam sisters kept the bulb sheds behind the chandler's, and every March they filled the lanes with peonies that no one else on the coast could grow, because the soil was sand and salt and the sisters refused to believe in either.

Ada was the one who drew them. She had a pen cut from a heron's quill and a bottle of Indian ink she guarded like brandy, and she sketched every bloom before it opened so the leaves would come out right. Black on the page, shaded with a dry brush, the petals curled like the lips of old letters. When the storm of 1931 stripped the sheds to the joists, the only thing left standing was a sketchbook in a tin trunk, and her drawings were as sharp as the day she made them.
Her nephew Tom wanted to sell the drawings to a man from London. He came in a grey coat, paid in cash, and asked whether the flowers were real. Tom said yes. The man said he doubted it, because nothing that pretty could survive the sea. So Tom walked him down to the wall, where the first peonies were pushing through the cracked mortar, and the man stood there with his hat in his hands for a long time.
He bought nothing. He took a sprig home in his coat pocket, and it was still in there when they found the coat years later, pressed flat between the pages of a ledger. That's how I know the story's true, love. Ink keeps if you keep it out of the light, and so does a flower that's been drawn well enough.
