Striped torus outline on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A ring-shaped torus is drawn in black ink with dense radiating lines that suggest its curved surface. The linework is fine and even, with no shading or colour, and the shape is centred on the inner upper arm against a plain, softly lit background.

Dear Hetty, the loop line has stopped since Monday, so I am writing this on the back of a timetable while I wait on the bench at Canal Street Junction. Mr Dobbs, the stationmaster, has finally explained why the thing was built so oddly. Pargeter drew the plans in 1889 as a doughnut of track, bent round an empty middle that no train was ever meant to enter. The carriages were to run its skin forever and arrive nowhere new.

I have been walking it every lunch hour to pass the time. Forty-eight iron ribs fan out from the central boss of the roof, and when the sun comes through the glass at four they throw stripes across the sleepers like the spokes of a wheel that has forgotten its hub. The inner curve is always in shade. Dobbs says the cleaners will not sweep it, and that a woman once dozed off in there and woke up convinced she had been travelling for a week.
Yesterday I found a ledger in lost property with one entry in pencil: a single ring, drawn freehand, and beside it, returned to owner, owner unknown. Under that someone had added the ribs, one line at a time, until the circle looked lit from within. Nobody claimed it. Dobbs let me keep the page.
I am sending it to you because I think the drawing is yours. You always said the middle of anything is the only part worth looking at. Come up on Sunday and we will ride the loop together, and you can count the ribs with me on the way round. Love, Ruth.
