Three feathers tied with ribbon on an arm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three feathers, one angled above two overlapping feathers, bound at the quill end by a thin ribbon that loops and wraps across the design. The feathers are rendered with smooth shading, highlights along the central shafts and darker barbs, giving them volume. The design is done entirely in black and grey ink against the skin, with the ribbon outlined and left mostly pale.

You find the bundle wedged behind the stove, where the damp never reaches. Three feathers, grey-barred and stiff, bound at the quill with a length of pale ribbon gone the colour of weak tea. Your father kept his writing things in a biscuit tin, and nothing else in the tin has been touched since the winter he gave up working the locks.

The Marigold lies at Bratch Wharf with her hatches shut against the rain. You sit on the step with the feathers across your knees and unfold the letter beneath them. It was never posted. It is short, because he never had much to say to anyone who wasn't on the water. It asks you to keep the stove lit, to wait for the spring tide, and to mind the lower gate, which sticks in cold weather and needs a shove from the shoulder, not the hand.

The ribbon is the odd part. Someone has tied it, untied it, and tied it again, three times over, as though deciding something with his fingers while his mind was elsewhere. The last knot is tight and neat, the sort he used on mooring lines. You understand he was choosing between staying and going, and that the feathers were the answer he couldn't bring himself to write down.

At first light you walk down to the lower gate with the bundle in your coat. You untie the ribbon, keep it, and let the feathers drop onto the brown water. They turn once, then separate, and the current draws them away towards the sea lock. You knot the ribbon around your own wrist, pull it snug with your teeth, and put your shoulder to the gate.
