Finger heart gesture on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single-line tattoo shows a hand forming a finger heart gesture, with the thumb and index finger crossed over a folded middle finger. Three short radiating marks sit above the fingers. The thin black linework is even and the design is shown in black ink only, placed on pale skin against a plain grey background.

Nell had three rules for the harbour kiosk: never open the till while the tide was turning, never sell the last crab to anyone in a suit, and never let the pilot boat's skipper catch her crossing her fingers. Dev Okafor had caught her on the first summer and had been waiting seven years to use it against her.

On Tuesday the wind came round to the north-east and the bar went white with breakers. Dev's boat was out past the breakwater with the mail and a seasick deckhand, and the radio kept saying nothing useful. Nell stood at the hatch with a tray of cockles going cold and watched the grey water. Then she folded her middle finger down, crossed her thumb over her index, and held the hand up to the glass, the way they had done since he first pulled her out of the mud on a dare. It meant I can see you, come back in one piece, and it had never once needed explaining.
The boat rounded the point an hour later, low and slow in the swell. Dev came up the slip with his hood down and his face the colour of wet slate. He said nothing. He lifted his hand, folded the middle finger, and made the little heart back at her, neat and deliberate, the way he always did when he did not trust himself with words.
Nell wiped her hands on her apron, unhooked the last tray of cockles from the rail and pushed it across the counter to him for nothing. In seven years she had never given anything away for free. The gulls took the rest.
